A thumbnail is a billboard at 320 pixels wide. It has one job: win the click without lying about the video. AI removes the design bottleneck — you still have to make the composition decisions. Here is the workflow we use in free.thumbnail.
Get the size right first
- YouTube: 1280×720 (16:9). Design at full size, judge at 320px wide.
- Shorts / Reels covers: 1080×1920 and 1080×1350.
- Leave the bottom-right clear on YouTube — the duration badge covers it.
One subject, strong contrast
Viewers scan feeds in under a second. One face or one object, large, against a background that separates it. Ask the model for a "clean studio backdrop, strong rim light" rather than a busy scene — busy backgrounds turn to mud at feed size.
Text: three words maximum
Layered text beats baked-in text. Generate the background without lettering, then add text as a layer so you can change it per video, move it off the subject, and keep it readable. High contrast, heavy weight, and a slight shadow — always check at actual size.
Reuse a template, vary the subject
Consistent thumbnails build channel recognition. Keep the layout, colours, and text position fixed; swap the subject and background per video. Save the winning composition and re-run it instead of redesigning every upload.
